Parents as Teachers (PAT) can give children and their families the information, support, and encouragement they need for the children to develop to their full potential during the critically important early years of life.
About the Program
PAT helps parents to obtain health care for their children, understand early childhood development, and learn more about parenting. Home visitors plan activities for parents and children, screen for child development, assess health, and gather information about family needs to make sure that children are ready to succeed in school. Families typically take part in twice-monthly home visits and may attend monthly parent and child social connection groups.
The PAT Home Visiting Program can serve a family in Newport News prenatally through entrance into kindergarten. Participation in Parents as Teachers home visiting is completely voluntary.
The Newport News Parents as Teachers (PAT) program is a participant of the Maternal Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) Project of the Virginia Department of Health. It is a division of the City of Newport News Department of Human Services.
