Firefighter/Medic Recruit Hiring Process Schedule - 2019

Our 2019 hiring process for Firefighter/Medic Recruits will open on March 30, 2019 and will close on April 20, 2019. This hiring process will be for candidates wanting to be hired by the City of Newport News Fire Department. Since the current process has changed from previous processes, please ensure you read the selection process steps. You must apply on-line on the City of Newport News’ employment website, and you must call 757-969-1800 (Monday-Friday 8 AM - 5 PM) to register for the written test. You are no longer required to submit a background packet. Any supporting documentation (i.e. driving record, DD214, etc.) will be requested at the time an interview is granted, if applicable.

The Newport News Fire Department is comprised of dual-role personnel. As such, Firefighter-Medics rotate their emergency response duties between ambulance and fire apparatus. Due to their dual-role responsibilities, once hired, Recruits are required to successfully graduate from two (2) separate structured Recruit training programs designed to maximize their dual-role capabilities:

At a Glance…

  • $42,000 base salary with adjustments for certifications, skills and experience
  • + $2,000 per year for EMT-I
  • + $5,000 per year for Paramedic
  • + $600 or $1,000/year (at hire) for approved associate/bachelor's degree

  • Requires completion of the Hampton Roads Recruit Fire Academy (HRRFA), Tidewater Regional Fire Academy (TRFA) or any similar fire academy approved by the department.
  • Must obtain and maintain Advanced EMT (AEMT) certification, and successfully complete the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Testing Process.
Recruits are compensated during training in extensive fire and emergency medical academies. Upon completion of Fire and EMS programs, Firefighter/Medics will earn a competitive salary while averaging ten (10) working days per month.
