The Special Events section plans, manages, and promotes city-wide festivals and special events held in the City of Newport News. Individuals, community groups, and businesses can be part of these events as Vendors, Exhibitors, Entertainers, and Corporate Sponsors.

Saturday, May 3; 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
25th Newport News Children's Festival of Friends- Newport News Park
Kids ages 2 -12 will enjoy over 100 free hands-on activities, costumed characters, and free children’s rides.  This year's festival is a special celebration of our 25th Birthday.  Food vendors ($) on site. $5.00 per car parking fee, all activities are free. Virginia Senior Games - locations vary by event
Athletes age 50 & up compete in eighteen sports. Entry fee for athletes, free admission for spectators, free parking. For complete information, see www.vrps.com

Saturday, June 7; 12:00 noon - 5:00 p.m.
King-Lincoln Park Day- King-Lincoln Park
Music, free children’s activities, and community exhibits. Food vendors ($) on site. Free admission, free parking. Attendance: 2,000.  See here for complete information about the 2014 King-Lincoln Park Day.

Friday, July 4; 7:00 p.m. 10:00 p.m.
4th of July Stars in the Sky Victory Landing Park
The Virginia Peninsula's biggest July 4th event features live music, food vendors ($), and fireworks over the James River. Free admission, free parking. Attendance: 20,000.  See here for complete information about the 2014 4th of July Stars in the Sky event.  Updated Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 2:45 p.m.: Due to the weather, the Newport News 4th of July Stars in the Sky will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2014 from 7 - 10 p.m. with fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

Saturdays, August 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30; 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
Weekend Workout- City Center at Oyster Point
Join us for FREE workout sessions under the bandshell tent at City Center. Newport News Instructional Classes certified instructors will lead the classes. Open to all ages and levels, no registration required- just come and join in the fun! Class schedule: 8:00 a.m. Yoga, 9:00 a.m. Tai Chi, 10:00 a.m. Zumba, and 11:00 a.m. Variety Fitness. All classes are 50 minutes.

Sundays, August 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31; 11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Sunday Funday- City Center at Oyster Point
Enjoy free games in front of The Cove Tavern at City Center. The games might change each week (table tennis, corn hole, volleyball) but you can always count on the fun!

Saturday, September 13; 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Virginia Symphony Orchestra VSO Jazz- City Center at Oyster Point
This exciting ensemble will transport you to the height of the swing ear with the best of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Glenn Miller and more! Free admission, free parking. Food vendors ($).

Saturday, October 5 & Sunday, October 6; 10:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. each day
41st Newport News Fall Festival of Folklife- Newport News Park
Southeast Virginia's biggest traditional craft show features over 200 vendors, traditional crafts and trades, folk entertainment, food vendors ($), and children's activities. $10.00 per car parking fee. Attendance: 70,000. Friday, October 17; 6;00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
U.S. Fleet Forces Concert Band- City Center at Oyster Point
The United States Navy Concert Band, the premier wind ensemble of the U.S. Navy, presents a wide array of marches, patriotic selections, orchestral transcriptions and modern wind ensemble repertoire. As the original ensemble of the Navy Band, the Concert Band has been performing public concerts and participating in high-profile events for over 85 years.   Free admission, free parking.  Food vendors ($).

Saturdays, October 18, 26, 31 and November 1; 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Films by the Fountain- City Center at Oyster Point
This free film series is a perfect chance to relax and enjoy a special date night under the stars at the Fountain in City Center. Bring your own blanket and picnic, or purchase tasty food from a 757 Eat the Streets Food Truck.  Free admission, free parking.

October 31- Bettlejuice (PG)
November 1- Ghostbusters (PG)

Thursday, November 27 through Thursday, January 1; 5:30 p.m. 10:00 p.m. each night
Celebration in Lights Newport News Park
Drive through two miles of holiday light displays. $10.00 per car, $60.00 per bus. Attendance: 112,000. 

Friday, December 5; 6:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m.
Hollydazzle City Center at Oyster Point Fountain Plaza
This unique holiday event combines fireworks, special effects, and music in a spectacular show presented “in the round” on the Fountain Plaza. Free children’s activities, holiday performances, and food vendors ($). Free admission, free parking. Attendance: 32,000.
